Career Options Over 90 percent  of farriers working today are self-employed. The profession offers a very flexible schedule, and some farriers choose to travel the racing or show circuits, providing their services as horses compete across the country. Some farriers also choose to only work part-time and run horse training, vanning  or breeding operations in addition to their shoeing work. Farriers can work with a variety of breeds in different environments, from the farm to the racetrack. Pleasure horses, racehorses and  even zoo animals can require attention from a farrier. They may also consult with veterinarians and construct special shoes or prosthetics to aid horses with severe foot problems. Education, Training, and Certification There are three major certification groups for farriers in the United States: the American Farriers Association (AFA), the Guild of Professional Farriers (GPF)  and the Brotherhood of Working Farriers (BWFA). These associations also offer additional benefits to their members, such as discounts on supply purchases, group insurance plans, and continuing-education clinics. Certification is not required for this profession but most farriers belong to at least one professional group. For those just starting out in the business, there are a number of shoeing schools that teach the basics of equine foot care along with some classes on equine anatomy, physiology, conformation, and behavior. Most farriers work as apprentices for a few years before venturing out on their own. The training helps the apprentice fine-tune his skills while getting advice and assistance from a seasoned professional. Part-time and new farriers reported an average of $24,000. While compensation may vary widely based on geographic location and type of work, this field is well known in the equine industry for its very solid earning potential. The average charge for trimming without shoeing was reported as $40 in the AFJ survey. With four keg shoes, that price was reported as just over $100. While the gross salary may be substantial, a farrier must also consider the costs of maintaining his business. These considerations include expenses such as insurance, trade association membership fees, truck maintenance, gas  and equipment replacement or repair. Job Outlook The demand for farriers is expected to steadily increase in the coming years, and the salary is also expected to continue to trend upwards. There are over nine million horses in the United States alone, and each horse requires foot care several times a year. Solid job growth is expected for this field over the next ten years. According to the American Farrier’s Association, most farriers are male, but women currently comprise 10 percent  of the field and that number is increasing.

When it comes to work, we want the same, but it’s inherently harder to get. Modern work is hairy: multiple tools and software “solutions,” flooded inboxes, uncertain expectations, and clashing coworkers and teams make for a complicated, chaotic workday.Below are four ways to declutter your work-life:1. Get control over time-cannibalizersFor many people, that’s email. I use Unroll.Me, which intersects and compiles subscription emails into one daily “rollup,” so you don’t have a million distracting, irrelevant emails popping up throughout the day. I’ve spent far less time on emails since getting Unroll.Me about a year ago because when I scroll through my daily rollup- which previews each new email- I realize how few of the emails I actually want to read or care about. You can also change your email process to reach Inbox Zero every day or week. I treat my inbox like a to-do list, and anything that isn’t an active priority gets filed into a highly specific folder or archived. So I’m routinely left with only essential to-dos, or a satisfyingly-empty inbox. Certain email providers, like Polymail (what I use), make Inbox Zero particularly feasible because you can file emails for “Followup” and “Read Later,” and the program will put the emails back into your inbox at the right time.Meetings are another common time sucker, and unfortunately there’s no Unroll.Me-equivalent solution. But you can devise systems that thwart meetings from taking over your workday. For example, you can schedule all your meetings each day back-to-back, allotting a defined time slot for each. Meetings probably won’t run over, because that would mean being late for the next one. Another solution is scheduling all meetings toward the end of the day. Then you’ll at least have had most of the day for real work, and people will be motivated to end the meeting on time so they can go home.But perhaps more time-killing than any externally-imposed work element is our own procrastination. Unfortunately, over time these “needs” become clutter that weighs us down and stresses us out. But, I still think it’s important to know how to budget and create one if you are truly just getting started.The trick is to not get caught up in fancy spreadsheets and obsessing over the numbers daily.  It can be a distraction from the real financial work and can cause you to get frustrated.Create a simple budget (monthly expenses, monthly income), stick to it, put it away, review monthly or yearly, adjust, and repeat.  No need to complicate it or be obsessing over every cent.Master Your Credit Score For Future EndeavorsWhether you know it or not, your  credit scores  play a huge role in your current and future finances.  This is especially true when you try to get a mortgage with low interest, applying for an apartment, getting approved for credit cards, etc.Having a poor score can make your life more challenging (like getting approved for loans), so it’s good to start monitoring your scores for free whil e correcting and improving your scores.If you are looking to monitor your scores and get free recommendations, I’d recommend trying Credit Sesame. It won’t harm your scores to check, and you can learn how to get the highest score possible.Make Your Savings and “Life Happens” Funds Work For YouWe all know the importance of saving money and having a “life happens” fund (you may call them emergency funds, but not everything is an emergency).  And although saving money is great, you also want to put that money to work for you a bit.This doesn’t mean investing in stocks or index funds (you could later once you have a good buffer saved), but you should still collect some interest on that money.That way, you’re building some extra cash while it is sitting in savings.Most banks have a pretty dismal interest rate these days, but there are many banks improving that.  Some are high-yield online savings accounts, which can average higher than 2%.  Doesn’t sound like much, but most banks have fractional percent interest rates or maybe around 1%.Plan for Retirement ASAP (Even If You Can’t Contribute Much)“I’ll worry about it later” is a classic excuse, especially for younger people just starting their professional careers.  But this mentality is what creates future headaches when you do get closer to retirement or when planning for it.Your company 401k (or if you use an individual IRA), should be started as soon as possible.  Even if you can’t afford to put much in or you don’t really understand how it works, just get started.You can always adjust, learn, and contribute more as time goes on.Compound interest  goes to work for you the longer your money is invested and the more you put in.  By worrying about it later, you may have to contribute 2x, 3x, or maybe even more to catch up to where you should be had you started early.    Too many times older people have said, “I wish I started sooner.”Use A Debt Payoff Strategy And Stick To ItThe  d ebt crisis in American  only continues, whether from student loans or high-interest credit card debt, most people will have some in their lifetime.  The best thing you can do is start to pay your debt down with a payoff strategy you choose.By this, there are different payoff methods like debt snowball, debt avalanche, balance transfers, etc.  The goal is to find the one that best fits your situation and appeals to you the most, then stick to a consistent payoff.If you are looking for more information about debt payoff strategies,  this article  is pretty good.  It may focus more towards credit card debt, but some of these can apply to student loan debt as well.Prioritize Your Spending, But Don’t Cut Out All Life’s EnjoymentsYou know the advice many financial guru’s tout, “Cut out your daily latte and you’ll be rich in 5 years!”  False.  Yes, it can save you some money every year if you do cut that out, but if it’s something you enjoy, then don’t feel ashamed for your small purchases.I’m all for prioritizing your spending, but small purchases are not going to be financially life altering.  Instead, you want to focus on cutting housing costs, food costs, and other large purchases.  Those areas will keep larger sums of money in your pockets in the long run.Downsize your apartment or house if need.  Start couponing, buying in bulk, or looking for ways to save money on food (like cooking and less going out to eat).  If you see something you want that is a big purchase, really think if it is necessary (like buying a new TV, getting a new car, etc).Ask For The Raise That You Probably DeserveIf you are working hard and are doing awesome work for your company, you deserve a raise.  And sure, you probably get that small annual raise.  But what good does that really do on your finances?  Most likely, it keeps up with rising costs of bills and inflation.However, if you would  ask for a raise  (like 5-10% more), this could elevate your financial life a bi t further.  Maybe that helps you pay down debt faster, increases your savings, or helps you contribute more to your retirement investments.And a lot of times, your manager is willing to give you a higher raise if you simply ask and present your reasons as to why you deserve it.Start-Automating Your Savings If NeedGoing to start this one off with some honesty.  I do not currently automate my savings.  Oh, yes you are probably thinking, “Hypocrite!”Before you leave an angry comment to call me out, I use to automate my savings but I no longer do this.Over the years, I’ve developed good financial habits and discipline that I do not schedule automatic savings.  Instead I manually do this, but I never miss my bi-weekly contributions.  I like having more control and some weeks I’m switching up what goes where.But, if you are just getting started or know you have challenges remembering to save first, then automate.  Your savings and retirement contributions will be systematic and yo u don’t have to login or remember too.Net Worth Management is Not Just For The WealthyMost people do not want to look at their net worth, either because they are scared of the results or think it only matters for wealthy people.  But, monitoring  your net worth  is actually a great influencer for your money management, no matter what level of wealth you have.Your net worth is important because: It can help you identify where you spend too much Helps you review your assets (investments) and liabilities (debt) Shows your goals, if you are on track, and encourages saving more Manage your net worth for free and keep track of your spending by utilizing  Personal Capital. The youthful impulse to hold mavens to the fire isn’t itself a problem. A problem only arises when the impulse ceases to be attended by research and self-awareness. Being informed is a long painful, humbling process.Authority is not a virtue earned lightly.“Unskilled and unaware”I recently wrote about the pluralistic ignorance of imposter syndrome-the idea that everyone feels alone in their self-doubt. This collective lack of confidence is certainly a hindrance to a productive labor system but the other end of the cognitive spectrum is just as detrimental. This other end was officially classified in response to the comical misfortune of a man named Mcarthur Wheeler.In 1995, Wheeler robbed two banks in Pittsburgh- in broad daylight. As he exited the banks (both of them) he made a point to smile at surveillance cameras-without a mask. He did, however, have a coat of lemon juice on his face. When authorities caught him they showed him the security footage. Wheeler’s reaction was one of utter bemuse ment.Given that lemon juice is sometimes used as an ingredient when creating invisible ink it stands to “reason” that bathing one’s face in the stuff would effectively conceal it from cameras. Wheeler wasn’t under the influence of any substances nor was he clinically insane.This profound error of judgment alerted the interest of psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger. The two soon after conducted studies to explore the Illusion of superiority instanced by Wheeler- inspiring the label: The Dunning Kruger effect.The Dunning Kruger effect refers to the unearned sense of mastery expressed by those of low ability; a misunderstanding of aptitude energized by a lack of base level knowledge.Dunning and Kruger began inspecting the condition with a pool of undergraduate students. After presenting them with a series of cognitive tasks they would ask the students how well they thought they did. Those that scored the lowest consistently overestimated how well they did by a signifi cant margin.The effect doesn’t just apply to academia. Similar experiments conducted at a gun range birthed the same results. Another study asked software engineers at two companies to evaluate their performance. 32% of the employees at one company and 42% of employees at the other company rated themselves in the top 5%.It’s not merely a matter of overconfidence. It’s a blind defiance of logic. The more incompetent you are, the more vulnerable you are to mistakes of self-perception.“A Google-fueled, Wikipedia-based, blog-sodden collapse of any division between professionals and laymen, students and teachers, knowers and wonderers â€" in other words, between those of any achievement in an area and those with none at all.”Tom Nichols detailed a potential cause pretty powerfully in his book back in 2017.  The Death Of Expertise describes the mass rejection of science and rationality. Nichols correctly suggests that the right we all have to speech has blunted our ability to pr operly assess its value. In some instances, some people’s import is worth more than others. That’s an important and obvious distinction to make.“Doctors, whatever their errors, seem to do better with most illnesses than faith healers or your Aunt Ginny and her special chicken gut poultice. To reject the notion of expertise, and to replace it with a sanctimonious insistence that every person has a right to his or her own opinion, is silly.”  Charitable.Our rabid antipathy toward experts partly owes itself to our collective masochism-particularly when it comes to progress.  We have a long way to go in the fields of science and epistemology. I understand the tendency to focus on the “lack ofs” that is bred out of frustration, but we’ve made some considerable strides. That’s undeniable. It is objectively lucky to born in the year 2019.Every plane that doesn’t crash, every person that doesn’t die from this or from that is a testament to our trajectory and a plea to a dhere to the counsel of those that have put in the work and time in their respective fields.A hesitance to request honest feedback, and a commitment to the idea that pundits don’t exist, is heartening drab dialogue. On a selfish level, narcissistic ignorance has made many of us incredibly boring and unproductive.  You can’t concurrently harbor a fear of failure and a passion for enlightenment. Just like you can’t have a proper shave without a mirror.MetacognitionIn closing, I’d like to share some thoughts on thoughts; i.e. the only thing keeping me from being a horrible writer is the awareness that I’m, at best, a pretty bad one.The process of evaluating the extent of what you do and do not know falls under the umbrella of a term coined by a developmental psychologist named John Flavell, in 1976: metacognition, “thinking about thinking.”It’s the cycle of scrutiny and surveillance that equips us with instruments of self-improvement. The idea that because information i s so readily available expertise is just a free afternoon away is both quixotic and cynical. Reading a Wikipedia article about existentialism with the expectation of becoming erudite is like eating an apple without a stomach and expecting the nutrients.Like Nichols states, intuitive knowledge is more complicated than memory retention. Lived experiences matter.Skepticism isn’t itself the issue. In fact, true progress requires a healthy dose of it. Not on its own though. Pyrrhonism is a highly reactive property.
