Thought Leaders Convene to Help ASME Focus its Technology Port...

Thought Leaders Convene to Help ASME Focus its Technology Port... Thought Leaders Convene to Help ASME Focus its Technology Port... Thought Leaders Convene to Help ASME Focus its Technology Portfolio(Left to right) Technology Advisory Panel members Karen Stelling, Paul Cleri, Bharat Bhushan, Eduardo Barrientos and Caleb Amy were among the thought leaders who met at the ASME New York headquarters on March 4 to help ASME identify technologies that would serve as the basis for its technology portfolio. (Photos by Wil Haywood, ASME Public Information) Earlier this month, ASME brought together 20 thought leaders from companies and universities across the globe to help identify a core group of technologies the Society could focus on when creating products, programs and technical content in the future. The eventual selection of three to five new and enduring technologies to serve as the basis of ASMEs technology portfolio is a key component of the Societys new strategy, ASME NOW, which is i ntended to establish ASME as the go-to organization for solving the worlds technology challenges. The group of 20 high-level volunteers, named the Technology Advisory Panel (TAP), met at the New York headquarters of ASME on March 4 for the daylong workshop. The meeting, which welches facilitated by Anne House Henrich of Cardinal Consulting and ASMEs director of market intelligence Svetlana Shaknes, employed a structured, focus-group styled format called the Delphi Method to help the participants through the selection process. The TAP meeting welches the third step in the initiative, which began in January when an 18-member Staff Technology Team was formed to begin the technology identifying process, reducing a list of more than 2,600 individual technologies to the 50 deemed most relevant for achieving ASMEs strategic objectives. In February, a survey was then sent to 125,000 Society members and qualified content contributors, whose input helped the staff team select the 24 technologie s that the TAP members were asked to review based on their relevancy to ASME as well as mechanical engineering and market-related parameters. Show of hands Members of the panel vote on which technologies should remain on the list as the meetings co-facilitator, Anne House Henrich (third from left), tallies the results during the Technology Advisory Panel meeting.By the end of the lively meeting in New York, the panel had narrowed the list of 24 technologies down to the 13 they saw as most germane to ASME manufacturing (including additive manufacturing/3D printing and digital plan and manufacturing) robotics gas turbines renewable energy (including energy storage) autonomous/unmanned vehicles bioengineering nuclear power distributed generation pressure technology, environmental engineering smart grid energy efficiency and aerospace. One important way that the members of the group were able to arrive at their final list was by concluding early on in the workshop that some of the ori ginal 24 technologies - such as artificial intelligence, big data analytics, STEM education, and nanotechnology - could be viewed as areas that enabled or supported the 13 technologies they ultimately selected.I think one of the main things we decided to do was to refine the process when everybody saw that some of the technologies were supportive and that this was more of a matrix than a direct list, TAP member Karen Stelling, a professor of practice at the University of NebraskaLincoln, said after the meeting. Once we could agree on that in the morning, we actually changed our direction and then I think it made everything shake out pretty well from there. Thats when we were able to make progress. Meeting co-facilitator Svetlana Shaknes (third from left) assists TAP members Steven Wallace, Tommy Gardner and Jeffrey Korengel as they prepare to assess the 24 technologies. Eduardo Barrientos, another member of the panel, concurred. The group realized that these supporting or cross -cutting technologies would be systematically embedded in all the other technologies as we develop products and services around those technologies, said Barrientos, a technology system engineer at General Motors PowertrainEurope. I think that made it simpler for the group to focus. Thats when we were able to really prioritize. The next step for the Staff Technology Team will be to conduct strength, weakness, opportunity and threat (SWOT) analysis of the 13 selected technologies in bestellung to further narrow the list to five technologies, which will be presented to the Board of Governors for approval by June 1.Panel member Bharat Bhushan said he was pleased with the outcome of the days activities. I was glad to see that ASME, the volunteer organization and the staff, felt the need to look at what is it they need to be doing, where they need to be focusing, said Dr. Bhushan, Ohio Eminent Scholar and the Howard D. Winbigler Professor at the Ohio State University. It was an effort wort h doing, and its good that they invited 20 volunteers from all over the world. ASME members come with a diverse background to bring in a room in a democratic way. Dr. Bhusan went on to say that he believes ASME should regularly revisit the technologies - perhaps as often as every few years - because of the constantly progressing nature of technology. (Left to right) Technology Advisory Panel members Jonathan Jennings, James Klausner and John Elter discuss their selections during the meeting. Laurent Fabry, global strategic account director at T.D. Williamson in Belgium, also commended ASME on the diversity of the group that had been assembled for the meeting. We had early career, we had academia, and we had various types of industries, he said. It created, in the end, a good representation of the market and a good group for identifying the market needs. I think it was also a privilege to be called upon and to be humbly representing the industry we serve.Barrientos commended ASMEs leaders for their efforts to develop a strategy that would be beneficial for the Society. Focusing around certain key technologies and then around markets is going to allow us to be more effective, he said. Its going to allow us to work together to look at the problems and actually organize ourselves in a better way so we can provide a better service for humankind. The other Technology Advisory Panel members who took part in the meeting were Caleb Amy, a graduate student from Georgia Institute of Technology Judith Bamberger from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory John Elter of Sustainable Systems LLC Tommy Gardner of Jacobs/CTO Mission Solutions Robert Hauck of GE Medical Systems Healthcare Ralph Hill of Hill Engineering Solutions LLC Jonathan Jennings, a student at the University of Missouri James F. Klausner from Michigan State University Jeffrey Korengel of ConAgra Foods Tim Lieuwen from Georgia Tech Brian Paul from Oregon State University Ravi Prasher from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory John Voeller of Black Veatch and Steven Wallace of Boeing Research and Technology. ASME staff members John Koehr, Raj Manchanda, Christine Reilley and Paul Cleri, who are members of the Staff Technology Team, also served as panel members during the meeting.

6 signs you are stupidly bored with your job

6 signs you are stupidly bored with your job 6 signs you are stupidly bored with your job Though it’s unrealistic to expect complete satisfaction 24/7 in our careers, if you’re constantly drumming your fingers, yawning in meetings and finding every excuse to do anything but work - your boredom might be reaching dangerous heights. You’re not the only one who lacks luster at the workplace, considering a recent survey found that 43% of employees feel blase while on the clock. Some periods of disenchantment are normal, but workplace expert Amy Cooper Hakim, Ph.D. says continued fatigue can lead to burnout - fast.“Even the CEO of an organization has some mundane tasks that bore him or her. But, ideally, we scatter the ‘chore’’ type work amongst fun and interesting tasks, so that the majority of our workday is enjoyable, meaningful and productive,” she shares. “When you are bored at work, you are less likely to submit quality work and are more likely to goof off. You may not perform as well or as consistently.”Do you worry your current gig has lost its app eal? Here, career experts give the undeniable signs it’s time to seek a new opportunity or make a change ASAP:You constantly watch the clockWe all have those days where the caffeine hits just right and you’re zooming through emails, sending out projects and killing it in every meeting. And then there are days when nothing is grooving and you feel like you’ve retreated back to your entry-level performance days. Here’s the deal: if you’re tuned-in to the clock, praying for the minutes to pass faster, you’re not engaged with your work.Career coach Cheryl Palmer explains work days will become increasingly agonizingly slow when you don’t fill your hours with tasks that interest you. “Instead of counting down the clock, volunteer to help someone else. If your work is boring, you can probably do it quickly and then have time to help someone else on the job who is really busy,” she recommends. You constantly zone outMuch like in middle school math class - where algebra jus t wasn’t your jam - if you’re daydreaming about the weekend, cooking dinner or your upcoming vacation during meetings, you’re bound to drop the ball. Zoning out is usually an indicator that you’re not invested, which should be a signal for you to raise your hand for more responsibility. As Hakim suggests, ask if you might learn a new job or help someone out with a new project, just to change the pace a bit. “This brief break from the mundane affords you an opportunity to learn a new skill or to help out a coworker,” she explains. You only do the minimum requiredThere’s nothing worse than hiring an employee to assist your team and they begrudgingly meet the requirements, without giving an ounce of additional effort to position the company for success. You know how much resentment breeds from working with someone who does the bare minimum, so when you start to deliver less than stellar work, it’s a red flag of boredom. Palmer says first and foremost, it’s not enough t o meet deadlines - but rather, to exceed expectations if you want to propel your career forward. After all, until you prove you can handle the tedious tasks, you won’t be trusted to explore more creative pursuits.“It’s unlikely that you will be given more responsibility or challenge if you don’t do the work that you have been hired to do well. Once you have established your reputation as a good worker, then you are in a position to ask the boss if you can take on a new challenge like being cross-trained to do another type of work which could be more interesting to you,” Palmer says. You goof off when you should be working.Dependent on your company culture, chatting about the latest celebrity gossip or asking for recommendations for a date night dinner place is welcomed conversation. But if you spend more of your hours Gchatting away about unrelated work topics, you’re engaged with your team - but not your job. Hakim explains if you were interested in your tasks, you wou ld not permit yourself to lose focus on your daily objectives. As a way to give yourself the time to socially connect, make a rule for yourself: you’ll take a five-minute break every hour or so, and then it’s back to the grind. This self-discipline takes practice, but Hakim notes it can do wonders for your personal accountability. You spend a lot of time on non-work-related tasks while on the jobIf you know more about your best friend from high school’s wedding than you do about this quarter’s sales projections, your idle hands might be disrupting your workflow. Though the social media landscape has fundamentally shifted many company policies, when you’re at the office, you should still give your utmost attention to your gig - not your Instagram feed. As a way to omit distractions, Palmer suggests taking the initiative to go above and beyond what’s required of you. This will help position you to become a more valuable employee and push you to commit to your work in a more effective manner. She adds this could include volunteering to serve on department-wide or organization-wide committees that serve the purpose of increasing organizational efficiency. “Serving on such a committee can make you more visible in the organization and could potentially open doors for you in the future,” she says. You scour online job sites regularlyWhen you’re in a dysfunctional relationship that’s unfulfilling, you might start noticing singles through a rose-colored lens. Or find yourself peeking over your pal’s shoulder while they’re Tindering. The same metric applies to job seeking: if you’re currently employed but have 10 job alerts from various sites, you likely aren’t digging your role anymore.“We all want to feel challenged and important. If you are not satisfied at work, it may be a good idea to look for another opportunity. But, still, make sure to meet job expectations while you are on the clock. After all, you want to earn a good recommendation for that next position,” Hakim suggests.

SF 180 - Request Pertaining to Military Records

SF 180 - Request Pertaining to Military Records SF 180 - Request Pertaining to Military Records If you seek to obtain a family members military record such as the DD-214 Separation Documents, Personnel Records, Replacement Medal / Ribbons earned, as well as military medical records, you can request any and all of the above by using the Standard Form 180 - Request Pertaining to Military Records. These documents can be used for a variety of reasons such as in proving military service, medical and legal evidence, as well as genealogical efforts. If you have a relative that served and you know very little about his / her service the National Archives maintain these records and such information that can be a source of pride for your family.    You can request your family members military records online, by fax, or by mail by using the SF-180 submitted to the National Archives - National Personnel Records Center.   You can submit the SF-180 form online or the following fax/mail address: NPRC Fax Number :314-801-9195NPRC Mailing Address:National Personnel Records CenterMilitary Personnel Records1 Archives DriveSt. Louis, MO 63138314-801-0800 How The Archives Is Organized Records are organized in  the National Archives and become archived 62 years after the service members separation from the military. As this is a rolling date, the current year, minus 62 years, is the latest year of service kept on file. Records with a discharge date of 62 years or prior are open to the public. Records with a discharge date of 62 years after the current date are non-archival and are maintained under the Federal Records Center program. Non-archival records are subject to access restrictions. The National Personnel Records Center, in St Louis, MO,  is home to all of the Agencys archival and permanent records. The NPRC houses all  Official Military Personnel Files  (OMPF), Organizational and Auxiliary files, and Official Personnel Folders (OPF) of former civilian Federal personnel who separated prior to 1973 at the center. The Mission of the NPRC  is to provide world class service to government agencies, military veterans and their family members, former civilian Federal employees, and the general public. The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) is one of the National Archives and Records Administrations (NARA) largest operations. The NPRC is the central repository of personnel-related records for both the military and civil services of the United States Government.  It has a state-of-the-art preservation laboratory for records conservation, a large public research room, and a multi-purpose room for meetings and public outreach. Public Information (General Public and Family Access) The release of information is subject to restrictions imposed by the Department of Defense regulations, the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Privacy Act of 1974.  Other people requesting information than the actual service member from military personnel records must have the release authorization signed by the service member or legal guardian. Access to only limited types of information can be provided if the service members signature cannot be provided. If the former member is deceased, the surviving next-of-kin may, under certain circumstances, be entitled to greater access to a deceased veterans records than a member of the general public. The next-of-kin may be any of the following: non-remarried surviving spouse, father, mother, son, daughter, sister, or brother. The Standard Form 180 is formatted for legal size paper (8.5 X 14), please print that way if your printer can accommodate. If your printer can only print on letter size paper (8.5 X 11), select shrink to fit when the Adobe Acrobat Reader Print dialog box appears. On a personal note, my Grandfather was a World War II veteran and served in Pattons 3rd  Army.  He was in 10 battles in 11 months as they traveled from Normandy to Berlin, then into  Czechoslovakia.  I was able to receive his DD-214, they placed the medals in the package, and together my father and I made a shadow box full of his awards, unit patches, and service related badges.  For more than 40 years, he had not seen his ribbons and awards as he gave them to his kids when he came home after four years of being overseas. It became one of his prized possessions and was featured with pride at his funeral.

Mental models and making decisions you dont regret

Mental models and making decisions you don't regret Mental models and making decisions you don't regret What makes a good decision? When I ask people that question, I often get answers like:“When the outcome is successful.”Why is it that we, as a society, romanticize outcomes? Only things and people that succeed are celebrated. Just look at all the articles and books that idolize successful people. And to a degree, that’s obvious. But it’s also misleading. We tend to overlook cases that did  not  come with a successful outcome. And when we  do  look at failure, we are often quick to explain why things failed. In hindsight,  we can all look at mistakes and say that it was imminent. But if preventing mistakes is that easy, why are we still make decisions that we regret?Take the case of the Titanic. Looking back, we all know that the luxury liner that traveled from Southampton to New York made many costly mistakes. For example, it is well known that the Titanic didn’t carry enough lifeboats.“What happens when all the lifeboats are used in case of an emergency?” is something tha t someone surely said, right? We just don’t know! We weren’t  there. How about another interesting fact? The Titanic was tested for  6 hours  and never with a full crew. After that, they loaded up the passengers and set sail towards New York.“Shouldn’t we try this thing out more before we bring passengers on board?” someone surely said. I guess not.But here’s the thing. No one  wanted  the Titanic disaster to happen. And no one predicted it … Until  after  the fact.A few decades before all those innocent people died, Fyodor Dostoevsky famously said:“Everything seems stupid when it fails.”Bad decisions and good decisionsIt’s easy to look at success and attribute it to good decision making. But here’s the thing- that statement is also true the other way around.Failure is not always explained by bad decision making. However, that’s what most historians do. But like Dostoevsky said,  in hindsight failure is always obvious. The people who were responsible for the Ti tanic probably thought they were making the right decisions at the time. After the fact, they probably regretted many things. But I don’t think good or bad decisions have anything to do with the outcome. Peter Bevelin, the author of  Seeking Wisdom, puts it well:“Good decisions can lead to bad outcomes and vice versa.”The truth is: You can’t predict the future. Sometimes even bad decisions can lead to good outcomes. So that’s why I think it’s pointless when people pretend they can teach you how to make “good” decisions. There’s no such thing. Any person who’s failed a lot in life will tell you that.Mental models: Focus on the process, not the outcomeThe way you look at how something works in the real world is called a  mental model. It’s your thinking framework about  something. But when we make decisions, we often don’t think about our framework and immediately jump to a discussion about potential outcomes. We ask, “What will happen if we make this decision?†That’s an incomprehensive method because you’re not questioning your decision-making process. You’re only looking at the outcome. But have you considered what specific thinking frameworks (mental models) you can use for your decision?Too often, we skip the process and jump right to deciding. Maybe that’s due to a lack of time, resources, or knowledge - it doesn’t matter.Whatever your reason is, it’s never an excuse to skip the decision-making process altogether. Because that’s the only way to become a bad decision maker - regardless of the outcome. So instead of focusing on how successful your choices are, focus on how comprehensive your decision-making process is.Look, you don’t have to know everything about mental models - I certainly don’t. Most pseudo-intellectuals spend more time  talking  about what a mental model is instead of using them to achieve anything meaningful in life. They just like to  define  mental models. But as you and I both know, knowledge w ithout application is useless. That’s why I recommend reading only the following 3 books that focus on this topic: Seeking Wisdom by Peter Bevelin - Discusses the mental models of Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett. Fooled By Randomness by Nassim Taleb - One of my favorite mental models. Helps with understanding how random events influence outcomes. Nudge by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein - Explains how our decisions are influenced by different factors. We can never predict the future, nor can we know all mental models that exist. But we  can  make decisions we don’t regret.By simply focusing on the thinking process, we can always say we did the right thing. And that’s the only sure way to avoid regret- no matter what the outcome is.“What’s the right thing?”It’s clear we should never regret making mistakes. Every mistake is a lesson after all. However, there’s another type of regret that literally kills people. It’s the regret of inaction.I’ve seen this up close with my grandmother. At the end of her life, she drowned in her own sorrow. And that sorrow was solely made up from regret about the things she never did.Look, no matter what you do, we all suffer in life. But there’s a difference in suffering, as Jim Rohn once said:“We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret or disappointment.”Achieving your goals. Improving yourself and your relationships. Writing a book. Buil ding a business. It’s painful. It takes a lot of time, energy, and sacrifice to achieve things that are worthwhile in life. But you know what’s also painful? The regret of inaction, disappointment, and laziness.Which type of suffering hurts more? It’s up to you to decide. Thanks for reading!I also wrote a book on this topic. It’s called THINK STRAIGHT.  Check it out if you want to learn more about controlling your thoughts. This  article  first appeared on  Darius Foroux.

Copywriting Tips for Creatives Who Hate Writing

Copywriting Tips for Creatives Who Hate Writing Copywriting Tips for Creatives Who Hate Writing Copywriting can be a tricky business for designers and other creative professionals, but it’s an essential skill to hone. Use these copywriting tips the next time you’re tasked with a writing project. Every creative professional needs good communication abilities, and writing skills are essential for your career toolkit. From client briefs and emails to blog posts and brochure copy, designers and other creatives are frequently called upon to flex their writing muscles. If you find yourself easily frustrated and staring far too long at a blank Word document, these copywriting tips for nonwriters will help you face your fears and find your voice. 1. Determine your topic and theme When it comes to copywriting tips, there is none more important than this one: Before you begin writing, determine both your topic and your theme. Your topic is the subject you are writing about; your theme is your point of view on that topic - the message you want to convey. 2. Pick your points   You likely have a few key messages about your topic. In fact, these main points probably helped inform your theme. While you may have lots of ideas to share, try to group them under a few headings. 3. Create an outline   After you’ve determined your topic, theme and main points, put together an outline. Once you have the bones of your piece in place, it’s easier to add the meat. 4. Lower your standards (at first) While your inclination may be to start at the beginning, it’s OK to jump around within your outline. Add information as it comes to mind. Not every sentence has to be perfectly constructed or even grammatically correct. Your goal at this point is simply to get your thoughts down on the page. 5. Flesh it out   After you’ve dumped all your ideas into your outline, add your supporting research. Then comb back through your piece and turn phrases into complete sentences, add transitions, and vary your word choices if you’ve referenced the same topic or idea several times. 6. Punch it up   You’ve introduced your topic and laid out your main points, which all support your theme. You’ve written a conclusion that reiterates your point of view or issues a call to action. Now it’s time to sell even harder. If you’re describing a product or service, for example, focus on using language that helps the reader picture or feel the concept you’re trying to convey. Connect with your readers by using power words such as you, free or new. 7. Keep it clean   Take the time to revise and re-read your work several times, then use spell check. Though you’re not a writer by trade, straightforward and error-free copy will get your ideas across in an authoritative, professional manner. Copy editing with care will make your writing stronger and more polished. Becoming a good writer takes practice, and even seasoned pros battle writer’s block. Remember that your objective is to create clear writing that is compelling and easy to understand. Skip the flowery prose full of adjectives, metaphors and clichés. If you follow these copywriting tips, you’ll not only knock a daunting task off your to-do list, but you’ll also boost your communication cred. SUBSCRIBE TO THE BLOG

Farrier Job Description

Farrier Job Description Farrier Job Description Farriers are highly skilled equine foot-care professionals. While this job is known to be very physically demanding, working in the hoof-care industry offers substantial financial rewards and a flexible schedule. Duties Farriers use a variety of tools, such as rasps and nippers, to trim and shape a horse’s hooves. They also adjust, reshape and apply horseshoes to the hoof if required. Horses generally require trimming every six to eight weeks to maintain the proper balance of the foot and lower limbs. A wide variety of shoes in different sizes, weights, and designs are available for use with minimal reshaping, but some farriers are skilled in ironwork and can make custom shoes. Individuals with these iron-working skills are also referred to as blacksmiths. The majority of shoes are of the prefabricated variety; a recent survey by the American Farriers Journal indicated that fewer than 10 percent of shoes were custom orders. Farriers must carefully evaluate the horse’s conformation, gait, and hoof balance when determining what adjustments to make. Some specialize in corrective trimming and shoeing of young, growing horses and use epoxy, resin, and glue-on shoes to change the angle of the foot and lower limbs and promote correct growth. Farriers also are routinely consulted by their horse-owner clients for recommendations on hoof care products, feeding, supplements, fly sprays and equipment. Physically, farriers must be able to stand for long periods while bending and lifting a horse’s legs. This is a very physically demanding profession and requires a degree of strength and fitness. Demand for Services According to the 2011 American Farriers Journal Media Guide, the average full-time farrier works on nearly 270 horses per year and averages 7.1 visits to each horse per year. That adds up to over 1,900 trimmings. In addition to routine care, there is also frequent demand for “emergency service” when a horse loses a shoe or has a sore foot that needs attention. Career Options Over 90 percent  of farriers working today are self-employed. The profession offers a very flexible schedule, and some farriers choose to travel the racing or show circuits, providing their services as horses compete across the country. Some farriers also choose to only work part-time and run horse training, vanning  or breeding operations in addition to their shoeing work. Farriers can work with a variety of breeds in different environments, from the farm to the racetrack. Pleasure horses, racehorses and  even zoo animals can require attention from a farrier. They may also consult with veterinarians and construct special shoes or prosthetics to aid horses with severe foot problems. Education, Training, and Certification There are three major certification groups for farriers in the United States: the American Farriers Association (AFA), the Guild of Professional Farriers (GPF)  and the Brotherhood of Working Farriers (BWFA). These associations also offer additional benefits to their members, such as discounts on supply purchases, group insurance plans, and continuing-education clinics. Certification is not required for this profession but most farriers belong to at least one professional group. For those just starting out in the business, there are a number of shoeing schools that teach the basics of equine foot care along with some classes on equine anatomy, physiology, conformation, and behavior. Most farriers work as apprentices for a few years before venturing out on their own. The training helps the apprentice fine-tune his skills while getting advice and assistance from a seasoned professional. Salary A 2011 survey from the American Farriers Journal indicated that experienced full-time farriers pull in an average of $92,600 (an increase from $80,000 in 2008). Part-time and new farriers reported an average of $24,000. While compensation may vary widely based on geographic location and type of work, this field is well known in the equine industry for its very solid earning potential. The average charge for trimming without shoeing was reported as $40 in the AFJ survey. With four keg shoes, that price was reported as just over $100. While the gross salary may be substantial, a farrier must also consider the costs of maintaining his business. These considerations include expenses such as insurance, trade association membership fees, truck maintenance, gas  and equipment replacement or repair. Job Outlook The demand for farriers is expected to steadily increase in the coming years, and the salary is also expected to continue to trend upwards. There are over nine million horses in the United States alone, and each horse requires foot care several times a year. Solid job growth is expected for this field over the next ten years. According to the American Farrier’s Association, most farriers are male, but women currently comprise 10 percent  of the field and that number is increasing.

How to declutter your work life

How to declutter your work life How to declutter your work life Millennials, like me, are minimalists: from our iPhones to our fashion, we value efficiency, simplicity and aesthetics. When it comes to work, we want the same, but it’s inherently harder to get. Modern work is hairy: multiple tools and software “solutions,” flooded inboxes, uncertain expectations, and clashing coworkers and teams make for a complicated, chaotic workday.Below are four ways to declutter your work-life:1. Get control over time-cannibalizersFor many people, that’s email. I use Unroll.Me, which intersects and compiles subscription emails into one daily “rollup,” so you don’t have a million distracting, irrelevant emails popping up throughout the day. I’ve spent far less time on emails since getting Unroll.Me about a year ago because when I scroll through my daily rollup- which previews each new email- I realize how few of the emails I actually want to read or care about. You can also change your email process to reach Inbox Zero every day or week. I treat my inbox like a to-do list, and anything that isn’t an active priority gets filed into a highly specific folder or archived. So I’m routinely left with only essential to-dos, or a satisfyingly-empty inbox. Certain email providers, like Polymail (what I use), make Inbox Zero particularly feasible because you can file emails for “Followup” and “Read Later,” and the program will put the emails back into your inbox at the right time.Meetings are another common time sucker, and unfortunately there’s no Unroll.Me-equivalent solution. But you can devise systems that thwart meetings from taking over your workday. For example, you can schedule all your meetings each day back-to-back, allotting a defined time slot for each. Meetings probably won’t run over, because that would mean being late for the next one. Another solution is scheduling all meetings toward the end of the day. Then you’ll at least have had most of the day for real work, and people will be motivated to end the meeting on time so they can go home. But perhaps more time-killing than any externally-imposed work element is our own procrastination. Learn what your go-to procrastination activities are- Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, The New York Times, Nordstrom, whatever- and then monitor and control your use with a Google Chrome extension like Intent. Of course, no app can substitute for self-control: defeat procrastination by remembering why you need to do the thing you’re resisting.2. Purge the unnecessaryMuch of our work and life clutter comes from a sudden feeling that we “need” a certain kind of pen, a certain clock or watch, a certain wardrobe, and so on. This feeling is particularly acute around the holidays and the New Year, when we’re trying to become a “New You” - and convince ourselves that we need to spend money to do it. Unfortunately, over time these “needs” become clutter that weighs us down and stresses us out. Conversely, Arye  Zucker writes on a  blog  for Unroll.Me, “The less we ‘need’, the more we start to have” - like presence, simplicity and peace of mind. For example, the made-in-the-USA wood office products company  Grovemade  caters to people who “care and think deeply about who and what we choose to associate with.” But a few years ago their cofounder realized that, ironically, the Grovemade shop had become disorganized and full of unnecessary clutter. He and his team  spent a month  purging the shelves, donating what they didn’t need, and organizing all tools and materials into their own bins on wheels to embrace their mission. You can do the same for your workspace. Go through everything at your desk and get rid of unnecessary duplicates: pens and sticky notes aren’t redundant, of course, but staplers and knick-knacks are. Be intentional about what stays. One clothing “hack” can also work for your office/cube: Put everything you think you might not need in a bin. Then donate whatever you never took out of the bin after six months. Our digital lives are increasingly cluttered, too. Throughout the year, many of us acquire apps purporting to solve some problem. Sometimes we find a game-changer, but more often each new app winds up in a virtual junk pile. Download as few apps as possible, and delete or sync everything you can. I challenge myself to have all my apps on one screen on my iPhone.  Bring It On  screenwriter  Jessica Bendinger  jots down notes in an always-open email message draft, so she can constantly access them. Sure, sometimes larger note-taking apps like Evernote are nice, but don’t underestimate the utility of having everything you could possibly need in one easy place, like your email, or Google Drive.3. Focus“As technology has made the human experience easier, it has also created an explosion of content and choice, products and services, all ‘diluting’ us as individuals,” writes Jamie Mustard, who has consulted for Grovemade, on his website. It’s that feel ing of being both scattered and drained at the end of a workday for which we don’t actually know what we accomplished.Simplify your work-life- and reenergize your purpose- by focusing on what actually matters at work. This applies in small matters, like the Internet, where it’s easy to get lost in something and forget what you were even doing. For this you can use something like the Chrome extension Momentum, which is a simple Internet browser background with a daily priority that reminds you to stay on track. “It simplifies your day, removes distractions and lets you focus on what’s most important,” Momentum writes on their blog. Likewise, outside the digital realm, a simple desktop setup can help facilitate focus. You don’t need all the latest do-dads. In fact, you need very little to accomplish great things and feel fulfilled. But the need for focus applies, most importantly, to your biggest priorities. What are you actually trying to do at work? Who are you trying to be? Focusing on these high-level goals, and why they matter to you, can help you immerse yourself in one thing at a time- and then master it. “If you’re immersed in things you love, especially in your work, what you create will have depth and meaning,” the Grovemade blog explains.4. Find a better fitAfter you’ve decluttered your work-life, you may realize that the clutter wasn’t yours. Some companies do an excellent job of organizing their workspace and focusing their priorities; others don’t. One employee raved about working at Journey Leader because things were “well organized and easily accessed” in the stock room. An employee at Target likewise celebrated that “It is an extremely up-to-date company. It’s super clean and well organized. I have no bad words for them in this area.”The way employees gush about their employers’ organization and cleanliness hints at how critical it is. This sense of organization can be difficult to define, but most people know it when they feel it. For example, REI consistently tops best workplace lists, including kununu’s best office environment. What about working at REI is so simple, organized and meaningful? It’s hard to say, but countless employees relay this feeling. Find a company with such inexplicable order, and it will be easier to create your own as an employee. At the end of the day, your work clutter isn’t just a messy desk: it’s confusion about what you’re doing at your job, uncertainty if you’re in the right place, and lost or misguided priorities. When you start to clean up, you get a simple-clear sense about why you’re here and what you want from work. This article was originally published on Kununu.com.

The best money management tips to help create financial peace

The best money management tips to help create financial peace The best money management tips to help create financial peace Not everyone needs to be a financial wizard, but everyone should be armed with the best - and simplest - money management tips.  And these straightforward items do not require you to be a genius or some math connoisseur either.Instead, these tips about money are things anyone can apply and become quite comprehensive with.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! These tips are also what got me on track to eliminating $50,000 in debt and achieve a  65% savings rate  without becoming extremely frugal or having a six-figure salary. This doesn’t mean you won’t get confused at times or be unsure about something, but that’s part of the learning process of financial literacy!  However, the goal of these tips below is to help you feel less stressed and more at peace with your finances.  Let’s dive in!Budget, But Don’t Get Lost In the Spreadsheets and NumbersI’m the guy who reall y dislikes budgeting and staring at numbers daily to see what was spent. But, I still think it’s important to know how to budget and create one if you are truly just getting started. The trick is to not get caught up in fancy spreadsheets and obsessing over the numbers daily.  It can be a distraction from the real financial work and can cause you to get frustrated.Create a simple budget (monthly expenses, monthly income), stick to it, put it away, review monthly or yearly, adjust, and repeat.  No need to complicate it or be obsessing over every cent.Master Your Credit Score For Future EndeavorsWhether you know it or not, your  credit scores  play a huge role in your current and future finances.  This is especially true when you try to get a mortgage with low interest, applying for an apartment, getting approved for credit cards, etc.Having a poor score can make your life more challenging (like getting approved for loans), so it’s good to start monitoring your scores for free whil e correcting and improving your scores. If you are looking to monitor your scores and get free recommendations, I’d recommend trying Credit Sesame. It won’t harm your scores to check, and you can learn how to get the highest score possible.Make Your Savings and “Life Happens” Funds Work For YouWe all know the importance of saving money and having a “life happens” fund (you may call them emergency funds, but not everything is an emergency).  And although saving money is great, you also want to put that money to work for you a bit. This doesn’t mean investing in stocks or index funds (you could later once you have a good buffer saved), but you should still collect some interest on that money. That way, you’re building some extra cash while it is sitting in savings. Most banks have a pretty dismal interest rate these days, but there are many banks improving that.  Some are high-yield online savings accounts, which can average higher than 2%.  Doesn’t sound like much, but most banks have fractional percent interest rates or maybe around 1%.Plan for Retirement ASAP (Even If You Can’t Contribute Much)“I’ll worry about it later” is a classic excuse, especially for younger people just starting their professional careers.  But this mentality is what creates future headaches when you do get closer to retirement or when planning for it.Your company 401k (or if you use an individual IRA), should be started as soon as possible.  Even if you can’t afford to put much in or you don’t really understand how it works, just get started. You can always adjust, learn, and contribute more as time goes on.Compound interest  goes to work for you the longer your money is invested and the more you put in.  By worrying about it later, you may have to contribute 2x, 3x, or maybe even more to catch up to where you should be had you started early.    Too many times older people have said, “I wish I started sooner.”Use A Debt Payoff Strategy And Stick To ItThe  d ebt crisis in American  only continues, whether from student loans or high-interest credit card debt, most people will have some in their lifetime.  The best thing you can do is start to pay your debt down with a payoff strategy you choose.By this, there are different payoff methods like debt snowball, debt avalanche, balance transfers, etc.  The goal is to find the one that best fits your situation and appeals to you the most, then stick to a consistent payoff. If you are looking for more information about debt payoff strategies,  this article  is pretty good.  It may focus more towards credit card debt, but some of these can apply to student loan debt as well.Prioritize Your Spending, But Don’t Cut Out All Life’s EnjoymentsYou know the advice many financial guru’s tout, “Cut out your daily latte and you’ll be rich in 5 years!”  False.  Yes, it can save you some money every year if you do cut that out, but if it’s something you enjoy, then don’t feel ashamed for your small purchases.I’m all for prioritizing your spending, but small purchases are not going to be financially life altering.  Instead, you want to focus on cutting housing costs, food costs, and other large purchases.  Those areas will keep larger sums of money in your pockets in the long run.Downsize your apartment or house if need.  Start couponing, buying in bulk, or looking for ways to save money on food (like cooking and less going out to eat).  If you see something you want that is a big purchase, really think if it is necessary (like buying a new TV, getting a new car, etc).Ask For The Raise That You Probably DeserveIf you are working hard and are doing awesome work for your company, you deserve a raise.  And sure, you probably get that small annual raise.  But what good does that really do on your finances?  Most likely, it keeps up with rising costs of bills and inflation. However, if you would  ask for a raise  (like 5-10% more), this could elevate your financial life a bi t further.  Maybe that helps you pay down debt faster, increases your savings, or helps you contribute more to your retirement investments. And a lot of times, your manager is willing to give you a higher raise if you simply ask and present your reasons as to why you deserve it.Start-Automating Your Savings If NeedGoing to start this one off with some honesty.  I do not currently automate my savings.  Oh, yes you are probably thinking, “Hypocrite!”Before you leave an angry comment to call me out, I use to automate my savings but I no longer do this.Over the years, I’ve developed good financial habits and discipline that I do not schedule automatic savings.  Instead I manually do this, but I never miss my bi-weekly contributions.  I like having more control and some weeks I’m switching up what goes where. But, if you are just getting started or know you have challenges remembering to save first, then automate.  Your savings and retirement contributions will be systematic and yo u don’t have to login or remember too.Net Worth Management is Not Just For The WealthyMost people do not want to look at their net worth, either because they are scared of the results or think it only matters for wealthy people.  But, monitoring  your net worth  is actually a great influencer for your money management, no matter what level of wealth you have.Your net worth is important because: It can help you identify where you spend too much Helps you review your assets (investments) and liabilities (debt) Shows your goals, if you are on track, and encourages saving more Manage your net worth for free and keep track of your spending by utilizing  Personal Capital. It organizes the big picture of your finances in one place.Don’t Let Credit Cards Control Your SpendingWhen it comes to debt and high interest, credit cards can get a bad rep.  But, they also are great for when you need to make a purchase, establishing credit, getting cash back, and other rewards. The real challenge is,  you should be in control of your credit card(s), not letting them control you.Credit cards can quickly become your worst enemy because you can turn to credit when you don’t have the cash.  It’s okay from time to time, as long as you can pay off the balance.A common scenario: when you run out of cash, you turn to your credit cards without considering whether you can afford to pay the balance.  This is how your high interest debt can snowball.Train yourself to not use credit cards on purchases you do not have the money for, especially when they are only for items that pr ovide temporary instant gratification.Final ThoughtsLike most things in life that you want to get good at, you have to practice and work towards your goals consistently.  Managing your money and finances is exactly the same thing, you get better and learn more as you build good habits. Many of the above money management tips will feel weird or will force you to think differently at first.  That may lead to some frustrations in the beginning, but your future will be better off.Just picture how it will feel getting the above organized and it becoming second nature to you. Now, instead of stressing and getting anxious about finances, you’ll feel more at financial peace. This article first appeared on Invested Wallet.

Narcissistic ignorance and a more productive you

Narcissistic ignorance and a more productive you Narcissistic ignorance and a more productive you You might have observed a common feature of the new age activist to be a potent lack of charisma. Ready-made phrases half-remembered, delivered with the aimless gusto of a squirrel with vertigo.  Passionate speeches presented clumsily. The best of them are sloppy regurgitations and the worst of them are unintelligible.Lately, it seems we’re encouraged to supplant acknowledgment of our shortcomings with distractions and oversimplifications. Freedom of expression has been redefined as a celebration of ignorance â€" one that is governed by an enmity toward expertise. Working in tandem with this is the societal effect of the degradation of language Orwell warned us about more than 70 years ago.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!A vulgar misunderstanding of terms like “democracy” has curbed forward thought and dispelled the notion of appraising opinions. The youthful impulse to hold mavens to the fire isn’t itself a problem. A problem only arises when the impulse ceases to be attended by research and self-awareness. Being informed is a long painful, humbling process.Authority is not a virtue earned lightly.“Unskilled and unaware”I recently wrote about the pluralistic ignorance of imposter syndrome-the idea that everyone feels alone in their self-doubt. This collective lack of confidence is certainly a hindrance to a productive labor system but the other end of the cognitive spectrum is just as detrimental. This other end was officially classified in response to the comical misfortune of a man named Mcarthur Wheeler. In 1995, Wheeler robbed two banks in Pittsburgh- in broad daylight. As he exited the banks (both of them) he made a point to smile at surveillance cameras-without a mask. He did, however, have a coat of lemon juice on his face. When authorities caught him they showed him the security footage. Wheeler’s reaction was one of utter bemuse ment.Given that lemon juice is sometimes used as an ingredient when creating invisible ink it stands to “reason” that bathing one’s face in the stuff would effectively conceal it from cameras. Wheeler wasn’t under the influence of any substances nor was he clinically insane. This profound error of judgment alerted the interest of psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger. The two soon after conducted studies to explore the Illusion of superiority instanced by Wheeler- inspiring the label: The Dunning Kruger effect. The Dunning Kruger effect refers to the unearned sense of mastery expressed by those of low ability; a misunderstanding of aptitude energized by a lack of base level knowledge.Dunning and Kruger began inspecting the condition with a pool of undergraduate students. After presenting them with a series of cognitive tasks they would ask the students how well they thought they did. Those that scored the lowest consistently overestimated how well they did by a signifi cant margin. The effect doesn’t just apply to academia. Similar experiments conducted at a gun range birthed the same results. Another study asked software engineers at two companies to evaluate their performance. 32% of the employees at one company and 42% of employees at the other company rated themselves in the top 5%.It’s not merely a matter of overconfidence. It’s a blind defiance of logic. The more incompetent you are, the more vulnerable you are to mistakes of self-perception.“A Google-fueled, Wikipedia-based, blog-sodden collapse of any division between professionals and laymen, students and teachers, knowers and wonderers â€" in other words, between those of any achievement in an area and those with none at all.”Tom Nichols detailed a potential cause pretty powerfully in his book back in 2017.  The Death Of Expertise describes the mass rejection of science and rationality. Nichols correctly suggests that the right we all have to speech has blunted our ability to pr operly assess its value. In some instances, some people’s import is worth more than others. That’s an important and obvious distinction to make.“Doctors, whatever their errors, seem to do better with most illnesses than faith healers or your Aunt Ginny and her special chicken gut poultice. To reject the notion of expertise, and to replace it with a sanctimonious insistence that every person has a right to his or her own opinion, is silly.”  Charitable. Our rabid antipathy toward experts partly owes itself to our collective masochism-particularly when it comes to progress.  We have a long way to go in the fields of science and epistemology. I understand the tendency to focus on the “lack ofs” that is bred out of frustration, but we’ve made some considerable strides. That’s undeniable. It is objectively lucky to born in the year 2019.Every plane that doesn’t crash, every person that doesn’t die from this or from that is a testament to our trajectory and a plea to a dhere to the counsel of those that have put in the work and time in their respective fields.A hesitance to request honest feedback, and a commitment to the idea that pundits don’t exist, is heartening drab dialogue. On a selfish level, narcissistic ignorance has made many of us incredibly boring and unproductive.  You can’t concurrently harbor a fear of failure and a passion for enlightenment. Just like you can’t have a proper shave without a mirror.MetacognitionIn closing, I’d like to share some thoughts on thoughts; i.e. the only thing keeping me from being a horrible writer is the awareness that I’m, at best, a pretty bad one.The process of evaluating the extent of what you do and do not know falls under the umbrella of a term coined by a developmental psychologist named John Flavell, in 1976: metacognition, “thinking about thinking.”It’s the cycle of scrutiny and surveillance that equips us with instruments of self-improvement. The idea that because information i s so readily available expertise is just a free afternoon away is both quixotic and cynical. Reading a Wikipedia article about existentialism with the expectation of becoming erudite is like eating an apple without a stomach and expecting the nutrients.Like Nichols states, intuitive knowledge is more complicated than memory retention. Lived experiences matter.Skepticism isn’t itself the issue. In fact, true progress requires a healthy dose of it. Not on its own though. Pyrrhonism is a highly reactive property. Coupling it with deliberation, and a clear understanding of individual strengths and weaknesses, promotes it considerably. We have much more to learn from the failure of experts than we do from the critique of fools. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
