Keep Your Head Up, And Keep On Learning A Time Inc. Developers Advice To New Women In Tech

'Keep Your Head Up, And Keep On Learning' A Time Inc. Engineer's Advice To New Women In Tech Versatile Developer Claire Young has gone through the previous a half year working for Time Inc. from the organization's Seattle office. She's been in the tech field since secondary school, when her enthusiasm for PCs drove her to proclaim an undergrad major in software engineering, and she's never looked back.PowerToFly talked with this mother of two about her adaptable work routine and her preferred pieces of her Time Inc. group's way of life. Claire's recommendation to ladies intrigued by tech: Keep your head up, and keep on learning. Please acquaint yourself with the PowerToFly community. My name is Claire, I work at Time Inc. in the Seattle office. I am the principle iOS designer in a half breed application advancement group here at Time Inc. I am initially from Seattle; my family all lives in the Seattle region. I was away for around nine years in the midwest, and afterward took two or three years off to have children, and now Time Inc. is my first all day work back in Seattle. Image through Claire YoungHow did you begin in tech?I initially began in tech so long prior. At the point when I was in secondary school I preferred utilizing PCs, and I thought going into tech had a great deal of potential. I figured it is enjoyable to compose the kinds of projects, similar to talk and AOL, that I utilized at the time.So I went into student and chose to study software engineering absent significantly more examination?â€" ?which is the thing that I figure many individuals do in any field when they're that youthful. In any case, I never thought back, it's an extraordinary field to be in. We could utilize more ladies though.Have you been dealing with any activities recently at Time Inc. that you're especially energized about? One of the best time portions of my activity is that I deal with prominent application items that I discharge on an extremely visit premise. Inside my first month and a half at Time Inc., we discharged an application for Sports Illustrated?â€" ?wh ich is incredible regarding a product advancement course of events. I'm extremely glad for the item that we came out with. We discharged that Sports Illustrated application on iOS and Android, and afterward half a month prior we just additionally discharged the Travel + Leisure Travel Guide application. So inside my initial a half year of working at Time Inc., I've taken a shot at two prominent applications. What's more, regularly, I for one have been the one to send to the application store or submit for audit. I've been coding also, yet I unquestionably feel incredible responsibility for item in light of the fact that as a rule I was the one to press the catch to state, Push this to the application store. Distribute this. Screenshots of the travel+leisure travel direct application Claire worked onTell us somewhat about the work culture at Time Inc. What's your preferred thing about working there?I work with an extraordinary group of truly keen individuals from exceptionally assor ted foundations, and we have incredible group culture. It's extremely amusing to go into work, into the workplace, due to all the cool individuals there. What's more, it's incredible to team up. I think remote work is incredible once in a while, but on the other hand it's extraordinary to simply team up with individuals as well.Of course there are likewise a great deal of material advantages?â€" ?office upbeat hours, an ice chest all around loaded with snacks?â€" ?yet you get similar advantages with a ton of other tech organizations. I think what truly stands apart at Time Inc. is the group culture.Does your position give you a ton of adaptability with your schedule?I by and large work around one day out of every week from home, which helps a ton. As a mother, there are circumstances that surface?â€" ?a child is wiped out, or perhaps there's no day care?â€" ?life comes up, and I simply need to telecommute. I truly appreciate working, yet I figure it tends to be hard for working moth ers to cling to an exacting 9â€"5 on location plan. For me, I don't figure it would be feasible. It's incredible that Time Inc. is adaptable about working plans as long as I get my work done. You referenced that you work remotely part of the time. How would you balance these two diverse workplaces while keeping up group cohesion?Right now, everybody in the group essentially chips away at their own timetable. There are a couple of things you don't miss, as significant gatherings for the duration of the day, however as long as you keep associated and complete your work it's truly adaptable. I find that the way to working remotely is to remain associated through talk, video conferencing, and screen share. That way you don't wind up sending 20 messages to and fro before you make sense of what's going on.For my group, we're generally sort of working remotely in light of the fact that Time Inc's. principle office is in New York?â€" ?a three-hour time distinction. In any event, when we're n earby in Seattle, we do a great deal of speaking with the New York group. So it's extremely imperative to keep correspondence lines open with the fundamental office and with each other. What counsel do you have for other ladies keen on working in tech?I think the tech field is an incredible field for ladies to be in. The primary misguided judgment that ladies will in general have is that programming implies working without anyone else in a segregated domain and not conversing with others. That is a bogus suspicion, since developers frequently need to take a shot at huge programming items with an enormous group of individuals that all need to get along. So I think the truth of programming improvement is in reality better than a great deal of the previously established inclinations that ladies have before they go into the field. But as it is currently, it's difficult for ladies to discover tutors in the field. A ton of ladies my age have dropped out of the field and are not returning. T hat implies that 10, 20 years not far off, the ladies who might be tutors?â€" ?senior engineers coaching new, youthful junior designers?â€" ?are just not there any more. I think we have to invest more energy into enrolling ladies into tech with the goal that the cutting edge can feel a greater amount of an even male-to-female proportion in the workforce.I would likewise simply say, don't be disheartened. At the point when I originally began taking software engineering classes in student, I generally felt like I was less brilliant than a portion of my male partners who were sure. Be that as it may, certainty isn't generally proportionate to being correct. So don't get debilitated, keep your head up, and continue learning.Looking for a vocation as compensating as Claire's? Playing the Game, the Job Search Odds Game

Playing the Game, the Job Search “Odds Game” Playing the Odds Game Playing the Game, the Job Search “Odds Game” Does this sound familiar? Joe Dayton’s job search plan meant he applied for a job and then waited to hear back from the hiring company. No response? No job? Then Joe started another job application cycle. His job search dragged on and on, driving up his frustration level. Why? Joe, the eternal optimist, believed each time that the job was going to work out, so why get another one spun up? He convinced himself that “this was the one” and he had a real chance to win… this time. But he didn’t win that job. So, weeks later, he started over again looking at job postings. As a result, it took Joe a lot longer to get a job. Bottom line: If you are not willing to play the “Odds Game,” meaning juggling multiple job opportunities at the same time, then don’t job search. It’s one of the toughest concepts for job seekers to execute. Everybody understands it â€" the more job opportunities you have in play, the more likely you’ll get an offer â€" but most are not putting it into practice. It’s hard, even for the toughest among us. I’m coaching an ex-police officer right now and even though he committed to finding 5 new career opportunities three weeks ago…well, you know the rest. Why Play the Odds Game? Rules and Reasons Reason #1: Waiting will bring you down. Waiting and doing nothing is bad for you. It will send you right into negativity, triggering self-doubt and low confidence. You will feel better about your search, your progress and your opportunities if you have a lot to do. A “lot to do” will only come out of generating a lot of activity. If you follow this plan, you’ll wake up every morning with a new task. Reason #2: Speed up the time between now and your start date. Do you want a job in six weeks or six months? Do you want interviews within the next two weeks or two months? The only way to speed up your results is to multiply your opportunities. Even the best salespeople, who know how to manage a pipeline of client prospects, are terrible at managing their own job search the way they do a sales territory. And a job search IS a sales process! Rule #1: Minimum of 10 “active” job possibilities at once. You need 10 active opportunities in motion at the same time. If one drops off, add one. You must find 10 job opportunities that are either posted on a website, in a newspaper, or verified as a real job opening through your networking. Do not count the make-believe-job-you-wish-for-if-you-could-design-one. An “active” opportunity means you have done something with it. You might only be in research mode prior to applying, but that is activity, so the job is “active.” Use your Cut the Crap (CTC) Job Tracking Tool, so you avoid the excuse that this is too much to handle. (Works well even if you are currently employed and looking to make your next career move.) Rule #2: Make each job possibility countâ€"or cross it off the list. No cheating! My father taught me, “If you cheat, you are cheating yourself.” So don’t fudge how you count your 10 active opportunities. Each of the active job possibilities must meet one of the following requirements: You are doing research and preparing your customized application to send them. You applied and are within a 15-work-day (Monday through Friday) window to hear something back. You had a phone or face-to-face interview and are within a 15-work-day window to hear something back. You heard something back from the company, acknowledging receipt of your application, and you are within the 15-work-day window to take the next step. The good news: Every time you cross one off your list, you improve the odds! You haven’t lost, you get to shop for a new job and add a new opportunity to the group. Build out your 10 opportunities now, track each one, and always maintain 10 in your pipeline until you land your next great job. Got a specific challenge? Let me give you a hand; I’m ready to help! Informational Interviewing 10 Tips for Success

Informational Interviewing 10 Tips for Success TweetInformational interviewing can be an amazingly effective tool to help you find a job. Of course, you need to do it right! In a previous post I discussed why its a great thing to do: because it can lead to opportunities and offersas well relationships and information. In this post Ill tell you how to conduct these meetings in a way that gets results. First, a few pointers on getting the interview in the first place: Ask people you know for potential contacts in the field or company youre interested in. Mention a common interest or acquaintance in the subject line of the email, or first thing in the phone conversation, to get their attention. Ask for a specific, short amount of time like 20 minutes. (If all goes well, maybe you can spend more time with them on some other occasion.) You may be more likely to get a yes if you ask for a career research conversation or a conversation about careers in your field rather than an informational interview. People think of a conversation as easy and enjoyable, while an interview is more like work. Set up an in-person meeting if possible, in the persons office or a coffee shop near their location. A teleconference (Skype, Google Hangouts, etc.) should be your second choice, a phone meeting your third. Tips to make the most of the meeting: You have probably heard some of these tips before, but not all of them and every one of them is important. Build trust and rapport first and foremost. Be on time. Aim to make the meeting comfortable. Take a genuine interest in the other person. Follow their cues: Do they seem to want to get straight down to business, or are they chatty and casual? Rapport is more important than covering a lot of ground. If the relationship gets off to a great start, information can come later! Have a (short) list of questions. Mention right up front how many questions you have; this will help you manage the time. One of the most important questions is What other resources should I look into? Above all, youre hoping for introductions to hiring managers ultimately, other insiders at your target companies (see #3 below), or anyone who might have information that gets you closer to these. Use good judgment before asking for this favor. Warm up with questions about the person youre talking to his job, company, career and interests and your target companies. Offer a briefnetworking bio or marketing plan / target companies list.Avoid giving them a resume, because this is neither a job interview nor a resume critiquing session. If a resume is requested youre better off sending it after the meeting, when you know more about possible opportunities and can target it appropriately. Take a few notes, but dont bury yourself in your notepad. (Immediately after the meeting, take a few minutes to complete your notes at a coffee shop or on the train.) Mind the time and excuse yourself at the time agreed upon. Dont leave it up to them to tell you that they need to get back to the rest of their busy day. Promise to update them within a certain amount of time (e.g., a week) on your experiences in following up on any advice or leads theyve given you. Obligate yourself to follow up. That way, when you get back in touch youre not being a pest, youre just keeping a promise! Mail a thank-you card as soon immediately after the meeting. You might be surprised how much this is appreciated. An attractive card may be propped on the persons desk for days, reminding them about your job search. Update them later as promised. Provide a brief progress report on the actions you took or people you contacted. This demonstrates follow-through, helps your contact feel the satisfaction of making a difference, and can lead to valuable new tips and information. Keep in touch with a quick update every few weeks until you find your new job. Otherwise, their promise that Ill keep my eyes open for you is meaningless because theyll forget about you. And how will they know youre still looking if you dont tell them? Use a system to schedule follow-ups Outlook tasks, Jibberjobber, your CRM, or a tickler file. Invite the person to connect on LinkedIn and possibly other social media if they seem open to it. When you land your new job, thank this person again for helping you in your search, and then stay in touch. For example, you might thank them again when you get to your one-year job anniversary. Career Crisis where do you want to be in 5 years

Career Crisis where do you want to be in 5 years There I was sitting in a coffee shop having a delightful networking meeting when I was caught completely off-guard by a simple question: where do you want to be in 5 years? My career immediately felt like it was spiraling out of control. In hindsight, it was a wonderful moment a gift, really. Enjoy my story below but first heres one of my favorite career crisis quotes: You cant connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something: your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leads you off the well worn path. -Steve Jobs Many of my readers know that I made a huge career transition to move from the corporate world to my current role as an entrepreneur and Career and Leadership Coach. I had so many  dots that lead to my career transition today. Of course, I did not realize these were all  dots as I was experiencing it. I now have the luxury of looking back and making all of those connections. Heres one of my favorite dot stories  below. It was 2004 and I had just moved to Austin, Texas. I worked in the Human Resources Consulting and Outsourcing Industry and didn’t find a lot of companies in Austin that focused in the market. Here is what I knew: I needed to find a job and knew only two people in Austin. Neither of them worked in my industry. Since LinkedIn was only about a year old at this point and wasn’t the ‘go-to’ place for networking, I reached out to my Alumni database. I then found 100 alumni from Marquette University living in Austin! I emailed all of them individually asking for help in my career transition and many of them responded and offered their help. I am still overwhelmed today by the support I was shown by complete strangers. They all had the same questions for me: What type of job are you looking for? Since I didn’t know of any jobs in my industry, I let them know I was looking for a role that was tangential to my current job: Human Resources. My new network did their best to connect me with individuals in HR. I had a lot of coffee meetings with these individuals to network and build relationships in hopes to land a full-time career. At one of these coffee meetings, my world came crashing downor so I thought. I was introduced to a friend of a friend of my Marquette network who worked in HR and we agreed to meet at a coffee shop to learn more about one another. We had some nice pleasantries and he asked me to talk through my career history. So far, so good! This was a pretty commonplace conversation. Then he asked me this question: Where do you want to be in 5 years? For me, this was not a simple question. Suddenly my head started swirling and I felt dizzy. Answering, where do you want to be in 5 years? shouldnt have been THAT hard! There was a rush of powerful and negative emotions that hit me at that moment as I realized â€" I don’t want any role in HR in 5 to 7 years. I don’t want to work in Human Resources for the rest of my life. Then, my next thought â€" if I don’t want a role in HR in the next 5 to 7 years, what do I want to do? That question kept echoing in my head and there were no answers. What do you want to do? I honestly cannot remember to this day how the rest of the meeting went. Did I coherently explain that I didn’t know? Did I say that I wasn’t feeling well and needed to leave? How did I answer where do you want to be in 5 years? I have no idea. I simply remember getting into my car and hysterically talking to myself about not knowing what I wanted to do. This was the first time in my career journey where I didn’t have a plan or even an idea and I was overwhelmed. That question launched me into a full career crisis. The silver lining of this moment is that I found a career coach who helped me work through a career management process: reflection, finding clarity, creating a plan and taking the actions to achieve my goals. This moment, this dot that led to my overall career crisis has helped me understand what many of my clients experience and what they are feeling when I ask, where do you want to be in 5 years? For example: sheer panic over my career overwhelming feelings fear lack of clarity or ability to focus not knowing what the steps were to obtain clarity not believing in myself being unable to assess my strengths or value 12 years later and I can still tap into the emotions I felt on that day in the coffee shop. It was a turning point for me, but I couldn’t realize it the moment. This was one of my dots that has led to my current career. Dots are not always easy to experience; they can bring a myriad of emotions, thoughts and behaviors. I was lucky to find someone to help me take what I learned in that dot and move forward. I encourage all of you, as you experience some of the negative dots, to reach out for help, seek resources; individuals, books, videos, courses, articles, podcasts, etc.) who can help you navigate this part of your career journey. If you would, please share one of your dot stories below! Or share your answer to, where do you want to be in 5 years?

Answering the So What Interview Question

Noting the 'So What' Interview Question Noting the 'So What' Interview Question Tips on the best way to present your achievements with setting so as to pro the senior-level interview. In the last article, Quit Taking Yourself for Granted, we saw methodologies to recognize and welcome the effect you have had on associations and people. Presently, we'll take that to the following level with a four-section equation for measuring your achievements and recounting to your accounts in a significant and convincing way.The single greatest slip-up individuals make with regards to sharing their achievements is giving outcomes without setting. Saying that you developed income by 15 percent without taking note of the economic situations or objectives doesn't state much.In different words, you haven't responded to the inquiry, So what? How did your methodology contrast with what the normal individual may have done? This is a significant point numerous individuals miss.Without the advantage of an equal universe where to test our hypothetical correlations, this might be hard to e valuate with any exactness. By and by, the allurement with respect to many humble spirits is to accept that anybody confronted with similar realities and difficulties would have done likewise. Not necessarily. Why didn't anybody think about this sooner? Individuals may have perceived the issue or opportunity. They may even have concocted an approach to address the issue. Be that as it may, in the event that they didn't make a move, the understanding is good for nothing. Thoughts are all over. Credit legitimately goes to the individuals who make things happen.Converting your achievements into the STARs configuration will take care of this issue. What was the Situation What was your particular job or Task? What Action did you take? What were the Results? What was the circumstance? This is the place you clarify what the genuine issue (or opportunity) was, the reason it was an issue, to what extent it had been an issue and what may have happened had the issue not been tended to. How and when did it become evident that there was an issue? What was your particular job or assignment? Portray your job. How could you end up in a situation to address the issue? Is it accurate to say that you were chosen? Selected? Chosen? On the off chance that you were chosen or selected, what was the title of the individual who named you? Did you volunteer? Did you take on the venture all alone initiative? What move did you make? How could you address the issue? What explicit advances did you take? What were the results? This part is generally direct, since it requires quantifiable proof of your viability. The greatest error individuals make around there is restricting their speculation to dollars spared or earned. Cash is only one quantifier. Challenge yourse lf to consolidate the other five: Time Quality Amount Wellbeing Consistence (Incidentally, on the off chance that you can't envision how security and consistence concern you, don't stress. They most likely don't.)Here's a model from one of my clients:Situation/Challenge:To address the waste and cost related with the removal of 30 55-gallon drums of waste coolant from machine activities every month. Removal cost: $4,500/month ($150 x 30)Task:Selected by Operations Manager to smooth out activities and lessen squander coolant expenditures.Action:Researched chances to reuse coolant and suggested a $10,000, once interest in coolant reusing equipment. Results: Complete yearly investment funds: $162,000. Reusing process disposed of: $54,000/year in removal costs $108,000/year in coolant buys. return for capital invested on $10,000 venture: Less than one month. When measuring is a challengeIn a few cases, the quantifiers may not be self-evident. One secretary I trained demanded there was no real way to evaluate her achievements. By all accounts, that would have all the earmarks of being valid. All things considered, it isn't useful, or especially illuminating, to state, I grinned at 87 percent of the individuals who strolled in the entryway. However, when I tested further, she uncovered that her organization, on three separate events, had disposed of her whole division. Each time, she was hand-picked by the official group and turned into the main worker to endure the cutbacks. From a potential business' perspective, that quantifier resembles an outsider support that says:She's incredible. That is the reason we made a special effort to keep her.As you may see, this isn't tied in with gloating; it's about proof. Individuals who appear to be showoffs are the ones who can't offer something besides sparkling consensuses without any motivations t o believe.Stick to the realities, and the STARs approach will limit the probability that your accounts will seem to be boasting. Rather, you will surrender it over to the audience to pass judgment on the estimation of your endeavors. I consider this the It's a Wonderful Life Approach to promoting yourself. In the film It's A Wonderful Life, George Bailey is allowed to perceive what life would have been similar to for his family, companions, and town had he never been conceived. That is actually what each activity tracker needs to envision also. How are things extraordinary, ideally better, for your organizations, colleagues, companions, and family? What happened-that may never have happened-were it not for your efforts? If you can respond to this straightforward inquiry, you will be well headed to revealing the gold in your experience and recounting to your story in a convincing manner. You will likely figure out how to get individuals to think:Wow, on the off chance that she can do that for them, simply figure what she could accomplish for us.Do that and you will have prevailing with regards to accomplishing something most occupation trackers never do.

Why Networking Offline Is Still Crucial For Executives - Work It Daily

Why Networking Offline Is Still Crucial For Executives - Work It Daily We live in a general public that qualities online associations above up close and personal correspondence. This makes it simple for work searchers to deal with their employment inquiries and systems administration directly over the Internet. Be that as it may, as an official, organizing face to face is certifiably not an under-appreciated skill structure. Truth be told, from multiple points of view, it's still more significant than systems administration on the web. Here are a couple of reasons this is valid: Correspondence Flows More Smoothly Face-To-Face At the point when you're amidst an up close and personal systems administration lunch with an expert pal, guide, or board part. It's typically simpler to completely communicate along these lines than when attempting to have a similar kind of meeting on the web. To and fro trades have consistently been increasingly legitimate when held face to face. You don't need to hold up minutes, hours, or even days to hear once again from the individual you're speaking with permits you to speedily and briefly convey your message unfailingly. Non-verbal communication Tells More Of Your Story As you definitely know, appeal is a significant offering moment that attempting to prevail upon the individual you're organizing with. What's more, while innovativeness can enable your character to sparkle by means of online interchanges (blog passages, messages, tweets, and so on.), it's difficult to hear voice enunciations, see your enthusiastic grin, or even feel your confident handshake over the Internet. Mistaken assumptions Are Often Averted In-Person We've all been there. We've gotten an email that gave off an impression of being to some degree dry, or perhaps we reacted to a post and afterward asked ourselves, Did that fall off the manner in which I expected? Oftentimes, it's hard to completely communicate through composed correspondence, even with italics, all tops, outcry focuses, and then some. Commonly, an arm press or fast grin can clear up disarray, and obviously, this is impossible over the Internet. Systems administration in-person is something you ought to consistently focus on as an official. Indeed, your solitary reason for not doing so ought to be that you live away and essentially can't organize a gathering. In the event that you can by any stretch of the imagination, it's critical to consistently attempt to do as much disconnected systems administration at social capacities, over lunchâ€"and even in a liftâ€"as you can to establish the enduring connections expected to make sure about an occupation. 5 Ps To Make Your Post-Grad Years Awesome - Work It Daily

5 P's To Make Your Post-Grad Years Awesome - Work It Daily 5 P's To Make Your Post-Grad Years Awesome Like most prospective alumni, as your confirmation draws nearer to reach, numerous individuals have presumably begun to advise you that no doubt about it reality and the genuine workforce. What's more, as most prospective alumni (and how about we be genuine, a lot of post-graduates and twenty-year-olds, as well), this can be sweat-soaked palm instigating and demoralizing. You don't should be helped to remember the future like it's something to fear. Related: Top 7 Survival Tips For New Grads In The Workplace What these good natured individuals deplorably neglect to illuminate you is that your initial steps into this present reality, and the open doors they bring, can be magnificent. Wonderful, as in, equivalent amounts of energy and nerves. It's a fun, versatile, elating time in your life. This is the perfect time to begin picking up involvement with everything life and vocation. While I would empower anybody - of all ages - to consistently look for new encounters, challenge yourself, and keep on learning, there are a couple of different things I've found that you can never begin doing too soon. 5 P's To Make Your Post-Grad Years Awesome So right away, here are the five P's of making your post-graduate years magnificent: 1. Individuals You meet a wide range of individuals in school and begin to acknowledge what your identity is. By the time you graduate, focus on it to interface with individuals who bolster you, direct you, snicker with you, and coach you. It's essential to acknowledge we are never too old to even think about having good examples, and perceive that by finding these individuals, you will figure out how to give back sooner or later, as well. 2. Progress Progress moves past simply continuous learning. This is tied in with growing new abilities and discovering approaches to apply them. Regardless of whether it's by making a venture completely all alone, by chipping in, or simply through classic act of those new abilities, investigate approaches to practice your gifts. Discover approaches to show how you've advanced after some time and individuals will regard your eagerness to develop by and by and expertly. 3. Tolerance Tolerance is an ethicalness. There's an explanation that is a truism. Tolerance can be difficult to find, much harder not to lose, and more significant than you anticipate. That is not an idiom (presumably on the grounds that it's a significant piece) however it ought to be. I'd prefer to introduce what I'm going to state by advising you that I'm stating it out of adoration: There is a solid possibility you won't land your fantasy work directly out of school. In any case, (and that is a major however), this doesn't mean you won't land an energizing, satisfying, makes-you-develop, fun occupation. In this sense, I'm not proposing that tolerance implies lounging around and sitting tight for your fantasy work. It implies having persistence enough to try sincerely and gain your way to the fantasy work, while being available to the possibility that your fantasy occupation can, and will, develop and change with you. Therefore, it additionally implies having the tolerance to make sense of the numerous ways your well deserved abilities can be used. Because it's not the employment you envisioned having directly out of school doesn't mean you won't relish the experience. 4. Nearness Your quality is the thing that makes early introductions, is the way individuals interface with you, and regularly characterizes how individuals recall you. Except if you slept through your entire school understanding, you're mindful of the numerous ways your essence is seen on the web. From online networking to email to LinkedIn, individuals can gain proficiency with a ton about you just with a straightforward Google search. What they find is up to you, so know about the brand you're making for yourself. Yet, since I realize that you definitely know this (right?), I won't jump too profoundly into it. Rather, I need to remind you to concentrate on your genuine, in-person nearness. Be IN the second when you are with individuals. Give them the kindness of your time, your consideration, and your exertion without interruptions! Regardless of whether you are meeting, teaming up on a venture, or simply meeting somebody for espresso, remember that you have something one of a kind to bring to the table, thus do they. Let your quality, and your activities, show that you are certain, skilled, and merciful. Additionally, you never know the effect you could be having on somebody (or, they on you)... See #1. 5. Energy You've heard the term energy. Perhaps you've seen it utilized conversely with reason. Or crucial. matter how and so on, the thought is this: discover something you care such a great amount for, that it thrills you and makes you need to master all that you can about it. Few out of every odd piece of our profession will include our interests. In all honesty, it's even silly to feel that each energy we have can be transformed into a vocation. Notwithstanding, by distinguishing the things you are enthusiastic about, you can discover similitudes or topics and apply them to your work. Regardless of whether it's helping individuals, accomplishing physical work, voyaging, composing, working alone, or something else, there is an approach to consolidate what you love into your work. In this way, challenge yourself regularly to work determinedly and enthusiastically about something, and utilize this opportunity to discover the sorts of work that persuade you. To the exclusion of everything else, utilize the time after graduation to pick up as much experience as possible. You don't need to know your place on the planet the second you graduate. Rather, invest energy making your place on the planet and helping it develop! 15 Science-backed Tips for Writing Job Descriptions

15 Science-backed Tips for Writing Job Descriptions For many recruiters, hiring managers, or bootstrapping startups, hiring a new person is an incredibly important task. And while that statement may come as no surprise to those who have ventured to do it, the process itself can still have your reeling. Before you even think about the interview process or salary negotiation, you have to worry about things like finding a job posting site that fits within your budget â€"but will still get applicants to see it. You also need to write a description that correctly explains the job so you get quality applicants but also makes it sound appealing so that you actually get people to apply. The layout and content in a job description has been put under the microscope by background screening company EBI. After scouring the web for reports and tests, they put together an infographic that outlines the science of a perfect job description. Here are the main takeaways that you can use to immediately make a difference in your job postings. Job title length:  According to studies, the ideal length for a job title is 50-60 characters. Be specific:  In one test, using a generic term like “crew member” was outperformed by a more specific title of “cashier”. Furthermore, when comparing industry-specific terminology, like saying “CNA” versus writing out “Certified Nursing Assistant”, the industry-specific term got over 40% more applications. Description length:  Keep your main description 4,000-5000 characters long. This is equal to around 500-600 words. Scannable:  Eye-tracking tests show that readers skim the job description portion of the posting. So, when writing your description, avoid long, wordy paragraphs. Instead, use bullet points and shorter lines of text that include important keywords so that the eye picks up on these when scanning. Company description:  When ranking parts of a job posting that people read, the description ranks the longest and thus most important at 26 seconds. The company description is where the user spends the second most amount of time at 23 seconds. People want to know where they are applying and what your company is all about. In fact, 70% applicants in one survey from Glassdoor said that they will not accept a job with a company that has a bad reputation. Salaries:  Money is still an important motivator when applying for a job. With services like Glassdoor.com or Salary.com allowing job seekers full exposure to salary information, providing them with some numbers on your posting has proved important. Studies have shown that putting a salary range on your description can increase the number of applicants by 50%. Place this information near the top of the posting to increase your success even further. Mobile:  The world has gone mobile. The use of mobile devices in Millennials has infiltrated every industry from music to movies. Job searching is no different. 50% of 18-29 year olds use their smartphone to job search. So, what can you do to optimize your posting? The same way that you can optimize your posting to make it scannable also applies to mobile screens.  Remember, you are working with half the length of a desktop or laptop screen on mobile, so even sentences that seem short on a wide desktop screen can be 5-10 lines long depending on font sizes. When in doubt, test it yourself. Completion time:  Depending on the service or job posting, some job seekers are required to apply using time-consuming online applications. Keep this in mind when writing your descriptions and setting up your posting. When an applicant has to take more than 15 minutes to complete the full process, the submission rate drops off 365%. Like the mobile section above, you should always test the process yourself. Personal Branding Interview Amber MacArthur - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Personal Branding Interview Amber MacArthur - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke to Amber MacArthur, who is a new media host/producer, strategist, speaker, and author of Power Friending. In this interview, Amber talks about her new book, how to stand out, how to show ROI in social media, and more. What is Power Friending and how did you get the idea for the name? I got the idea of Power Friending when I was thinking about how the Internet has changed the definition of a friend and how important it was for businesses to learn more about this changing definition.  When practicing social media, its key to work hard and push the boundaries, so I think the Power reference is significant. What makes you stand out amongst the new media crowd? What do you recommend to others who are having difficulty standing out? Ive been participating in social media for most of my career. As far as having trouble standing out, I think its important to communicate in the social media space on a regular basis.  Consistency is the only way you will see results.  Think of practicing social media like going to the gym; if you only go once a week, chances are you wont get the body you want. Why are so many people having trouble showing real business value when it comes to social media? I think a lot of businesses are looking for a return on investment in the form of money, but the reality is that social media is simply another way to market and its difficult to calculate direct ROI.  However, there is definitely return on engagement.  In other words, you can build community and loyalty, which leads to sales. What success stories have you seen for personal and corporate brands? Zappos is perhaps one of best examples of social media done well, so I encourage everyone online to learn from them.  From listing employee tweets on their website to their CEOs active online life, Zappos has grown from the inside out.  Theyve made social media a priority inside the company, so its been easier to build community externally. How have you developed your own personal brand and turn it into a book deal with Portfolio? Ive always tried to have a strong presence online and respond to emails, messages, tweets, etc. with a personal touch. As for my book deal with Portfolio, the timing was right for me since I have turned my new media expertise into a career on the speaking circuit and a book is a natural fit.  Portfolio represents many great authors in the digital space, so Im honored that they signed me on. Amber MacArthur is a new media host/producer, strategist, and speaker. She is the author of Power Friending. Most recently Amber worked at Citytv as its New Media Specialist in 2006, reporting on new media and interactive news and trends on a national news program and hosting/producing Webnation, a half-hour current affairs program about internet culture. Prior to Citytv, Amber spent two years working as a TV host/producer with tech guru Leo Laporte at G4techTV, a national television channel entirely devoted to technology. Amber also developed “commandN,” a popular video podcast that covers online and offline technology trends. Aside from experience in the broadcast industry, Amber spent four years as a web strategist at Razorfish and software start-up HigherMarkets, both in San Francisco. She also worked as a web strategy manager for Microsoft Canada, but she is a Mac fan at heart.
